Aerobic Dance at Lumphini
เต้นแอโรบิกสวนลุมพินี
Every evening at six, a Bangkok park turns into an open-air dance floor — free, unembarrassed, and open to anyone who shows up.
Jing ler? — no way
Around 17:30 the plaza near the Rama VI statue fills up, a sound system goes up, and an instructor takes the stage. Rows form, the synthpop starts, and for an hour several hundred strangers move together. There is no sign-up, no fee and no audience — everyone is facing the same way.
Why it exists
Bangkok has very little public space, so its parks work two shifts: tai chi and jogging at dawn, aerobics at dusk. The classes are volunteer-led and have run for decades — a genuine civic habit rather than a tourist attraction. It is the most reliable way to see how the city actually lives, and it costs nothing.
Where and when
- Lumphini Park — the biggest and easiest to find; near the Rama VI statue, from about 17:30–18:00. MRT Si Lom or Lumphini, BTS Sala Daeng.
- Benchakitti Park — smaller crowd, newer surroundings, same hour.
- Chatuchak Park — large evening sessions, especially at weekends.
- Most district parks hold their own — if you hear the music, you're invited.
How to join without awkwardness
- Arrive five minutes early and stand at the back row — that's where beginners go.
- Wear anything. Nobody is in matching kit and nobody is looking at you.
- Bring water; even at dusk Bangkok is humid.
- Follow the person in front rather than the instructor — the choreography repeats quickly.
- Some sessions pass a small donation box for the sound system. Contributing is optional and welcome.
