Wat Pho

วัดโพธิ์

Home of the 46-metre Reclining Buddha — and of Thailand's first open university.

Jing ler? — no way

Rama III turned Wat Pho into 'Thailand's first university' — no admission, no teachers: over 1,400 inscriptions and murals on medicine, massage, astrology and literature were carved into the walls for anyone to read. UNESCO lists them as Memory of the World.

Jing ler? — no way

The Reclining Buddha's feet are the real masterpiece: five metres of mother-of-pearl inlay showing the 108 auspicious signs of a Buddha. Along the wall sit 108 bronze bowls — drop a coin in each and your wish is said to come true.
