River

Chao Phraya River

แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา

The 'River of Kings' — Bangkok's oldest road, still carrying rice barges, ferries and royal processions.

Jing ler? — no way

For grand royal occasions the river hosts the Royal Barge Procession: 52 carved and gilded barges rowed by over 2,000 oarsmen in ancient dress, chanting boat songs to keep time. The lead barge is a golden swan-god; rehearsals alone stop the city.

Jing ler? — no way

The river is tidal all the way through Bangkok: twice a day the sea pushes 30+ km upstream and the Chao Phraya visibly flows backwards. Ferry pilots read the reversal like a timetable.
